Lawyer Overview
David A. Copland is special counsel with Foley & Lardner LLP, and a member of the firm's Trademark, Copyright & Advertising Practice.
Mr. Copland counsels clients on trademark enforcement, protection and availability, as well as other non-patent intellectual property issues such as unfair competition, advertising, and copyright laws throughout the United States and other countries. He has extensive experience resolving trademark infringement and opposition matters, both foreign and domestic.
Mr. Copland represents clients in cases before federal courts throughout the United States, as well as in opposition and cancellation proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. He is experienced with dispute proceedings before the National Advertising Division of Better Business Bureaus, Inc., as well as domain name dispute arbitration panels.
Recent domain name dispute resolutions include:
- Hyatt Corporation and Hyatt International Corporation v. Unasi, FA 545021 (Nat. Arb. Forum, Oct. 3, 2005)
- Yokohama Tire Corporation v. Richard Jones, FA 606000739888 (Nat. Arb. Forum, Aug. 3, 2006)
Mr. Copland earned his law degree from Boston University School of Law (J.D., 1996) where he was a Paul J. Liacos scholar and completed an intellectual property concentration with honors. He took 1st place in the ASCAP Nathan Burkan Memorial Copyright Law Writing Competition at Boston University in 1995, and also authored the following book review: 27 Commentaries: Reviews of Books on Law and Public Policy 34 (1994). He earned his bachelor's degree in sociology and political science from Trinity College (B.A., 1990).
Mr. Copland is a member of the Internet Domain Name WHOIS Subcommittee of the International Trademark Association, the Tau Alpha House Corporation and the Deutsch-Amerikanischen Juristen-Vereinigung e.V. He is admitted to practice in Illinois and before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
