Lawyer Overview

John Singleton is a senior partner in the firm practicing primarily in the area of employment and labor law.  As a trial attorney with 25 years of experience, he also handles personal injury, intellectual property (copyright, etc.), and other civil litigation matters for the firm.

He has been universally acclaimed as one of the premier lawyers in Maryland in the field of labor and employment law.  Baltimore Magazine and Law and Politics Magazine has named John Singleton as a "Superlawyer" for both 2008 and 2009.  This rating results from the ratings filed regarding him from other lawyers, judges and other legal professionals who know him.  Best Lawyers in America, also resulting from polling of lawyers, has included him for both 2008 and 2009.  He was named on of "Washington D.C.'s Best Lawyers for 2009" by the Washington Post. He also has be cited as one of "Maryland's Best Lawyers" by the Baltimore Business Journal for the year 2009.

In Chamber & Partners , USA Guide to Top Attorneys, he was rated as Maryland's number one rated plaintiff employment attorney and was the only plaintiff attorney rated in their category 1 of ratings.  Chambers employed a group of researchers who conducted in-depth interviews of other lawyers in the legal community who were personally familiar with the attorney's work.  Researchers noted that they were impressed with the respect John commanded from his peers who called him tremendously talented and straightforward and honest in achieving extensive success on behalf of his clients.

John also earned an AV rating from Martindale Hubble, the oldest nationally recognized rating service which not only utilizes ratings of fellow attorneys, but also judges in making their determinations.  AV is the highest possible rating available A standing for pre-eminent in your field of law, usually reserved for the best in their field, and V representing the highest score for ethical standards.  The few who achieve this rating usually do so after practicing twenty or more years.  John received an AV rating after only eight years of practicing law, which is almost unheard of.  He also was named one of Baltimore's Best Attorneys as far back as 1997.

Mr. Singleton began his legal career as trial attorney for the National Labor Relations Board before going into private practice.  During his career, he was the first Executive Director of the Baltimore County Human Relations Commission after civil rights legislation created that agency. He has served as a Special Master to the United Stated District Court for the District of Maryland helping judges to oversee complex employment law litigation in that court.  John had also served as Chairman and served on the Executive Council of the Maryland State Bar Association Labor and Employment Section for over 12 years earning the Distinguished Service Award.  He has taught, lectured and authored too many articles to list here.

Many of John's cases have attracted high profile attention over the years.  In one case, he had represented a woman doctor suing a hospital for sex discrimination. This case was reported on by CBS's 60 Minutes ( Click here to view the video clip).  Mr. Singleton also led the way in fighting HMO's when he brought suit against a Maryland HMO and the University of Pittsburgh Presbyterian Hospital. The hospital refused a man a liver transplant because of his insurance which resulted in his death.  John recovered over $3,000.000 for the young widow and her daughters.  This case was widely reported in the local media as well as Dateline NBC ( Click here to view the video clip) Many of his other cases have also been extensively covered.

Besides practicing law, John does have a life.  He and his wife Kim have six children, four girls and two boys.  He has been PTA President at Riderwood Elementary School where his four daughters have gone and his boys have yet to go. John has coached girls' rec league slowpitch and fastpitch softball for more years than he can count and basketball for a couple of seasons as well.  In his spare time, he likes to play Yu-Gi-Oh with his little boys on the computer and looks forward to the day when he can play a round of golf.
