Joseph D. Edmondson, Jr. is a partner with Foley & Lardner LLP. A member of the firm's Securities, Enforcement & Litigation and Securities, Commodities & Exchange Regulation Practices, Mr. Edmondson focuses primarily on defending securities litigation and enforcement proceedings brought by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the FINRA, and other self-regulatory organizations.
Mr. Edmondson also uses his experience in litigation and civil trials to counsel firms and individuals on compliance with federal securities laws and regulations, as well as the rules of the FINRA and NYSE, with an emphasis on issues pertaining to supervision and supervisory procedures. He has been called upon to assist with internal investigations of broker-dealers and public companies.
Mr. Edmondson has represented numerous broker-dealers in regulatory investigations, litigation and arbitration proceedings involving, among other subjects: failure to supervise, NASDAQ trading practices, institutional and retail sales practices with respect to equity and fixed income products, underwritings of public offerings, "pay-to-play," insider trading, stock manipulation, advertising, research and suitability. His experience also includes commercial litigation and dispute resolution in both arbitration and mediation settings.
Mr. Edmondson served on the Federal District Court Subcommittee of the Maryland State Bar Association Litigation Section. The subcommittee is a forum for direct dialogue between the bench and the bar regarding various issues of practice in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland providing input regarding some of the court's many unique local rules.
While still a law student, Mr. Edmondson was active in the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless and the Community Legal Clinics program. He continues to devote a substantial portion of this time to community and pro bono activities, and currently serves as a board member of Gifts for the Homeless, Inc. (www.gfth.org).
Mr. Edmondson received both his law and undergraduate degrees from the George Washington University (B.A., magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, 1988; J.D., with honors, 1991). He served as an associate editor of the George Washington Journal of International Law and Economics.
Mr. Edmondson is admitted to practice in Maryland and the District of Columbia, before the United States District Courts for the District of Maryland and the District of Columbia, the United States Courts of Appeals for the Fourth and District of Columbia Circuits, and the United States Supreme Court.
