Lawyer Overview
John G. Turner, III is a partner in the firm's Amarillo office. He has been with the firm since 1991 and a partner since 1996. Mr. Turner's practice consists primarily of complex commercial litigation matters. In that regard, he has handled matters involving officer and director liability, accounting malpractice, legal malpractice, securities violations, fraudulent transfers and creditor's rights.
Mr. Turner has first chaired several complex jury trials. These trials involved a wide range of issues, including fraudulent transfers, securities violations and conspiracy to defraud. Mr. Turner has been on both sides of the docket, successfully representing both plaintiffs and defendants.
In 2004, Mr. Turner tried a case to a jury in the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia. Mr. Turner represented the FDIC as receiver for a failed bank. In that suit, the FDIC alleged that the defendant, Harald Bakkebo, had conspired to defraud the failed bank in connection with the bank's mortgage-backed securitization program. After a seven day trial the jury returned a verdict in favor of the FDIC for $161,000,000. The Court subsequently entered judgment in favor of the FDIC for the full amount of the verdict. It is reported that this is the largest jury award ever achieved against an individual in West Virginia and it was the 11th largest jury verdict in the United States for 2004. The United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit recently affirmed this $161 million judgment.
Mr. Turner graduated from Texas Christian University in 1983 with a B.B.A. with a concentration in Finance. He received his law degree 1989 from St. Mary's University School of Law where he graduated with distinction, finishing third in his law school class.
