Lawyer Overview

Peg Lautenschlager possesses a broad base of legal experiences in both the public and private sectors.  Prior to joining Lawton & Cates, she served as Wisconsin Attorney General where she represented Wisconsin citizens in both criminal and civil matters.

Criminal justice accomplishments include the prosecution of and conviction in a high profile multiple homicide case, the establishment of the Public Integrity Unit, the development of law enforcement policing and investigation protocol models (problem oriented policing, eye-witness identification procedures, electronic recording of target statements), and statewide law enforcement initiatives and services (the Wisconsin Methamphetamine Initiative, Crimes Against Children and the Wisconsin Internet Crimes Against Children Task Forces, identity theft, the Wisconsin Statewide Intelligence Center, Wisconsin Crime Laboratories process mapping and expansion).

Significant accomplishments involving enforcement of civil laws include landmark environmental litigation (global warming, New Source Review challenge, mercury emissions, public nuisance violations) and health care litigation (pharmaceutical average wholesale prices, hospital pricing for the uninsured, nursing home quality of care, Medicaid fraud).

In addition to managing numerous criminal and civil matters, Peg Lautenschlager has focused on civil rights issues and diversity.  She initiated a proposal for state civil rights enforcement authority and the Wisconsin Hate Crimes Initiative.

Former President Bill Clinton appointed Peg Lautenschlager to serve as United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin from 1993 until 2001.  Significant accomplishments include the establishment of a Hate Crimes Initiative, the Western Wisconsin Methamphetamine Initiative, Americans With Disabilities Act and Civil Rights enforcement actions (including the first case in the U.S. to find an H.I.V. positive child to be protected by the A.D.A), prosecution of the first-ever federal criminal identity theft case, Medicare Fraud and quality of care enforcement, and complex white collar crime prosecutions.

Peg Lautenschlager represented the Fond du Lac area in the Wisconsin Assembly from 1989 until 1992 and served as Winnebago District Attorney from 1985 until 1988.  She also served as an interim Court Commissioner for Winnebago County and an Adjunct Instructor at U.W. Law School, Ripon College and U.W. Oshkosh.

Peg Lautenschlager has held numerous Board positions and appointments.  She served as a member on the State Board of Commissioners of Public Lands from 2003 until 2006.  She currently serves on the Board of Advisors for Columbia Law School State Attorneys General Program and on the Board for Blandine House, Inc.
