James D. Murphy, Jr. received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wayne State University and a Juris Doctor degree from the Detroit College of Law. He is a member of the Oakland County Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He is licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan. He is also admitted to practice law in the Eastern and Western Districts of the Federal Courts in Michigan and the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals His experience is both as a plaintiff's trial attorney and insurance trial lawyer for corporate defendants.

James has handled cases involving product liability, professional liability, construction law, highway design, ERISA, securities, toxic torts, premises liability and mass tort insurance coverage. He was named to the Steering Committee and Liaison Counsel by the court in the Dow Corning insurance coverage case. He has spoken to professional groups on the subjects of product liability, tort reform, mass torts and insurance coverage, and the use of mock trials. He served as an arbitrator for both the American Arbitration Association in negligence cases and the New York Stock Exchange in securities cases.

James is a supporter of the Detroit Symphony, the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Kerrytown Concert House. In addition to music and art, he is an avid basketball fan and sailing enthusiast.
