Law Firm Overview

Clayton-Johnston, P.A. is one of the oldest continuous law firms in the State of Florida. The firm has earned the highest rating of AV by Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory. The original partnership was formed in 1927 by E. G. Baxter and E. A. Clayton.

Members of our firm carry on the tradition of being active in the Florida Bar and the Eighth Judicial Circuit Bar Association. The firm includes former members of the Board of Governors of The Florida Bar and of the Board of Governors of the Young Lawyers Section of the Florida Bar. Our lawyers now serve or have served on numerous Florida Bar committees. Two members have served as chairman of the Continuing Legal Education and Client Security Fund committees. The firm includes five past presidents of the Eighth Judicial Circuit Bar Association. One former partner was appointed by the President as a U.S. District Judge. Another former shareholder was appointed by the Governor as a Circuit Judge for the Eighth Judicial Court and is now a sitting judge.

Lawyers in the firm actively participate in service clubs, professional organizations, community activities, political campaigns, and religious organizations in the Gainesville, Florida area. One member of the firm served as special counsel to Senator Bob Graham (then Governor). One member of the firm is a past president of the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce, and three members have served as General Counsel of the Chamber.

There are presently five (5) shareholders and four (4) associates. The firm utilizes paralegals and regularly hires the best and brightest law clerks from a pool of outstanding law students at the University of Florida College of Law. The firm utilizes the latest technology in computer aided research to serve our clients.

The bulk of the firm's practice is in state and federal courts in Alachua, Bradford, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, Levy, Marion, Putnam, Suwannee, and Union Counties. Trial lawyers in the firm are admitted to practice in all Federal Courts in Florida, as well as the 11th Circuit of Appeals and the 6th United States Court.  Two of the firm's shareholders are admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.

Clayton-Johnston has been helping injured persons recover damages caused by the negligence of others in personal injury and wrongful death claims for over eight decades. When representing injured clients in personal injury or wrongful death claims, Clayton-Johnston offers a free initial consultation and does not charge an attorney's fee or costs unless a recovery is made for the client.

Clayton-Johnston's offices are located in the historic Star Garage Building at 111 Southeast First Avenue, Gainesville, Florida, directly across the street from the Alachua County Courthouse.
