Jason Leif represents energy industry participants, focusing on investigations and compliance, pipeline and liquefied natural gas (LNG) construction and permitting, rates and tariffs, asset acquisitions and divestitures, and energy-related contracting matters.
Jason has conducted internal investigations and worked with companies responding to inquiries from regulatory agencies, such as the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Jason has tried cases before FERC administrative law judges (ALJs), including matters involving the impact imported LNG could have on natural gas-fired electric turbines and gas distribution facilities and the valuation of crude oil shipped from Alaska's North Slope through the Trans Alaska Pipeline. Representative clients in public matters include BP, CenterPoint Energy, and Chevron.
Before joining Jones Day, Jason worked at the FERC, where he advised ALJs in litigation involving gas pipelines, oil pipelines, and electric utilities. He contributed to decisions relating to an electric utility merger, transmission tariffs, and rate design issues. Jason is a member of the Energy Bar Association (EBA), the Texas Bar Association, the Houston Bar Association, and the Bar Association of the District of Columbia. He serves as member of the EBA's board of directors and the board of directors of the Charitable Foundation of the EBA. Jason is past president of the EBA's Houston Chapter, where he remains on the board. Jason also is a member of the EBA's Natural Gas Regulation & Compliance Committee, of which he was previously a vice chair, and the Oil Pipeline Regulation Committee.
