Law Firm Overview

On August 1, 1963, Jim Nance founded the firm known today as Nance Cacciatore. Sammy Cacciatore joined the firm in 1967, Jim Sisserson in 1975 (retired in 1996), Ron Duryea in 1980 (retired in 1999), Jack Hamilton in 1984, Chip Barger in 1993, Jamie Nance in 1996, and Sam Cacciatore in 1998.

Since its inception, the practice has successfully focused its strengths and talents on a wide variety of personal injury and wrongful death cases. Areas of expertise include professional and medical malpractice, nursing home negligence, railroad accidents, airplane crashes, automobile and motorcycle accidents, electrical accidents, product liability, maritime injuries, tractor trailer and commercial vehicle accidents, and federal tort claims.

In 1967, the law firm obtained the first verdict in excess of $100,000 in Brevard County when a Montgomery Ward tire that had been improperly mounted detached from the car. The severe accident that followed caused the death of the driver of the car.

In 1971, Nance Cacciatore obtained the first $1 million verdict in the county, which was only the fourth verdict of its kind in Florida . In this case, the Melbourne Sears store roof collapsed while being built. As a result, the worker on top of the roof fell and was paralyzed.

The firm was part of the lead trial team in the Harbour Cay Condominium collapse case in which 31 workers were either killed or injured. This case ultimately settled for in excess of $10 million.

Nance Cacciatore was also the lead counsel in the first space shuttle pad accident that occurred at NASA when two workers were killed and three seriously injured as a result of a nitrogen purge test involving the space shuttle Columbia .

Most recently, Nance Cacciatore was one of the Florida firms selected by the Governor to represent the state of Florida in a suit against the American Tobacco Company, et al, which settled for $11.3 billion on August 25, 1997.

Besides monetary settlements, the firm is well known for handling several cases that have been instrumental in changing Florida law. One of the most noteworthy of these is the case of Hoffman v. Jones. This case changed the law from strict contributory negligence to that of the much fairer standard of comparative negligence or fault. On its own, the firm handled this case through several trials and appeals to an ultimate decision by the Florida Supreme Court that has since affected every personal case in the state. This case has also been cited as precedent in many other states.
