Richard D. Heideman was born in Detroit, Michigan, and is a graduate of The University of Michigan (BA, LSA 1969) and The National Law Center of the GeorgeWashingtonUniversity in Washington, DC (JD 1972). He completed the American University Law and Policy Institute Abroad at the HebrewUniversity in Jerusalem, Israel during the summers of 1970-1972 where he studied Legal Aspects of the Middle East Conflict and Comparative Law of Israel and the Middle East. Heideman was licensed to practice law in Maryland in 1972, and subsequently admitted to practice in Kentucky (1972), Indiana (1979), Wyoming (1979) and the District of Columbia (1984). He is admitted to practice in numerous federal courts, including the United States District Courts for the District of Columbia, the District of Maryland, the Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana, the Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky, the Western District of Wisconsin and the United States District Court for the District of Wyoming. In addition, he is admitted to practice before the United States Courts of Appeals for the Fourth, Sixth, Seventh and Federal Circuits, before the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, the United States Court of International Trade, the United States Court of Claims and The United States Supreme Court.
The law firm of Heideman Nudelman & Kalik, PC, which Heideman serves as Senior Counsel, is based in WashingtonDC, with offices in Tel Aviv, Israel.The firm concentrates its practice in corporate development matters, representing such firms as United Campus Holdings Company, LLC, and serves as lead counsel in pending litigation on behalf of victims of terrorism and injured consumers.
Mr. Heideman founded his law firm in 1973 having previously practiced law with the trial law firm of Spence, Moriarity & Schuster in Jackson, Wyoming.Heideman has handled civil, corporate and criminal defense matters in federal and state courts in various jurisdictions throughout the United States, including as Chief Trial Counsel in the murder case Commonwealth of Kentucky vs. Grimes, broadcast live on Court TV.He has appeared on CNN's Burden of Proof, Fox Morning News, CNBC and as legal analyst for the CBS-TV affiliate in Washington, DC, Reuters and other news organizations, providing commentary and analysis on the civil and criminal jury trials involving OJ Simpson, Marv Albert, the Oklahoma City bombing, the Washington sniper trials and on terrorism related issues, most recently appearing on Danger Zone, a Washington, DC broadcast on contemporary issues involving security and terrorism.
Heideman has had articles published in the Washington Times and in numerous other publications.He has served on the faculty of the National College of Criminal Defense Lawyers in Houston, Texas. He has authored an article in Criminal Defense Magazine entitled "Pre-Trial Motions: An Alternative Approach to Plea Bargaining" and has also authored the chapter on "Criminal Defense Practice" in the ABA Manual on Legal Assistants. Mr. Heideman is a member of the American Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar and the Bar Association of the District of Columbia, as well as numerous state trial lawyers associations and state Bar associations. He has served as Vice President of the Teton County, Wyoming Bar Association, and in 1997 was elected to a three-year term on the DC Bar Association Steering Committee for the Criminal Law and Individual Rights Section. He has served as Chair of the Criminal Law Committee of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia, and has taught seminars for the Kentucky Bar Association, as guest lecturer at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service Center for Arab Studies, the International Law Society of the George Washington University Law School, at the Israel Bar Association in Jerusalem, and has lectured on contemporary topics of interest throughout the world..Heideman was recently elected President of the George Washington University Law Alumni Association.
Active in numerous civic affairs, Mr. Heideman served as the elected President of B'nai B'rith International from 1998-2002 and now serves the organization as Honorary President. During his term of office as International President of B'nai B'rith, he served as Head of Delegation to the Durban Conference (UN sponsored World Conference Against Racism), participated in meetings at The White House with President George W. Bush, and met with numerous heads of state, prime ministers, foreign ministers and ambassadors throughout the world.In February 2004 he served as Chief Trial Counsel for Israeli victims of terrorism at hearings convened by the Dutch Center for Information and Documentation on Israel coincident with the International Court of Justice Hearings at The Hague, and authored the brief filed on behalf of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies with the International Court of Justice on the Advisory Opinion sought by the UN General Assembly regarding legal issues arising from Israel's construction of its terrorism prevention security fence.
Heideman was recently elected President of the George Washington University Law School Alumni Association, is the Chair of The Israel Forever Foundation, and serves or has served on the Boards of the Anti-Defamation League, Hillel:The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, the World Zionist Organization, the Jewish Agency for Israel, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, The American-Israel Chamber of Commerce, Inc. of Washington, DC, the World Jewish Congress, the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture, the Conference on Material Claims against Germany, the National Conference on Soviet Jewry, the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization, Inc., Health Care for America, Inc., and Northern Virginia Family Services, Inc.In 1985 Heideman served as an NGO delegate to the United Nations World Conference on Women in Nairobi, Kenya.
Former Chairman of the Board of the American Indoor Soccer Association and co-chair of the Greater Louisville/Jefferson County Sports Commission Planning Committee, he also served a term as the elected Mayor of the City of Spring Valley, Kentucky, in 1985-86.
Mr. Heideman was listed in Outstanding Young Men of America in 1980, received the B'nai B'rith International Family Award in 1981 and received the Label A. Katz Young Leadership Award from B'nai B'rith International in 1983. He was designated in "People to Watch" in Louisville Magazine in 1986, and in 1988 received the Heritage Award from State of Israel Bonds. Mr. Heideman has the distinction of having been decorated with the Merito de Mayo by President Duhalde of Argentina in 2001. This is the highest national award bestowed by the Argentine government upon non-citizens. He is currently or has previously been listed in Marquis' Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America, and Who's Who in Finance & Industry.
Heideman lives in Bethesda, Maryland with his wife Phyllis, who is a Presidential appointee to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Council. They are the parents of Ariana, a graduate of PhiladelphiaUniversity, Elana, a Doctoral Candidate at BostonUniversity, and Stefanie a teacher at Beth Sholom Congregation in Potomac, Maryland.
