Lawyer Overview

Mary Ann Capria is a member of the Technology and Intellectual Property Groups and counsels clients in strategic use of, managing and protecting all types of intellectual property assets (e.g., patents, trademarks, service marks, trade secrets, copyrights). Ms. Capria's practice also includes negotiating strategic partnerships and alliances, preparing licensing, joint development, sponsored research, employment, and confidentiality agreements. Her practice further includes intellectual property infringement, validity opinions, procurement and enforcement.

During her career Ms. Capria has been a litigation attorney in the Solicitor's Office of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, as well as in private practice, where her experience incorporated all phases of litigation, including trial and arbitration hearings. In addition to private practice, Ms. Capria was an in-house patent attorney with W.R.Grace-Conn. and was involved in all aspects of counseling on world-wide patent strategy, licensing, patent prosecution, and infringement and invalidity opinions. Ms. Capria was also a Research Fellow at the Kyoto Comparative Law Center and she has published and lectured on many aspects of patent and trademark law, trade secret law, and licensing.

Ms. Capria is the co-chair of the ABA-IPL Annual Publication Committee and member of the China Study Group for the AIPLA. Her recent speeches include "Biotechnology Licensing" for the Georgia Bar Association (May 2001) and will be speaking on "Web Site Audits" at the Insurance Industry E-Regulation 2001 Forum, and at the International Bar Association 2001 Annual Meeting regarding recent developments under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

Mary Ann received a J.D., University of South Carolina, 1984 and a B.S., University of South Carolina, 1979. She was Law Clerk to The Honorable Jean Galloway Bissell, Circuit Judge, United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, DC.
