0.5 out of 5 stars

Hiring Vincent P. Landeros as my lawyer was the biggest mistake I ever made when it came to my divorce. I went through three lawyers and Mr. Landeros was by far the worst. Mr. Landeros made so many mistakes that I am still returning back to court to fix the damage he has done to my case. Mr. Landeros wrote in my stipulation that I would pay for half of all privates school expenses and that my ex has complete control when it comes to my children?s education choices and this was never ordered by the judge (I purchased the court transcripts). Now my ex places my kids in private summer school whereas before I would spend the summer with my children and ironically, I have to pay for half of it. Because of Mr. Landeros I have lost valuable time with my children that can never be replaced. This was just one of many negligent or incompetent mistakes he made and his mistakes are very costly.

Don?t not hire! Extremely unprofessional and condescending! Wouldn?t call or email back or show up to meetings he scheduled! Had my alimony checks sent to his office instead of my address so I had to pick them up from his office and it took him months to fix his mistake! When I finally fired him because he wouldn?t respond to emails or phone calls I had to slip the forms under his door to get a response! And when he did he sent a bill almost a full year later! Getting divorced is difficult enough you don?t need to add a horrible lawyer on top of it!

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
