Lawyer Overview

Ed Sebold's experience in complex commercial and product liability litigation spans pharmaceuticals and medical devices, consumer class actions, bankruptcy, trade secrets, corporate governance, banking practices, post-closing disputes, and breach of contracts. He has played a significant role in the Firm's engagements as national coordinating counsel for Firestone Corporation in its tire recall class actions; national counsel for Wyeth in its antidepressant litigation; international counsel for medical device maker, Mentor Corporation; nationwide class action counsel for AcroMed Corporation; and class action counsel for Tele-Communications in nationwide cases challenging its billing practices.

Ed's experience also includes serving as trial counsel in numerous jury and bench trials throughout the United States and in international and domestic arbitration proceedings. He has had principal responsibility in complex commercial and product liability matters for the direct and cross-examination of expert witnesses and senior executives. Ed has sharpened his courtroom skills in fast-paced injunction and bankruptcy proceedings.

In recognition of the Firm's litigation success, Ed was pictured with his colleagues on the cover of The American Lawyer (January 2006) and in a story on the magazine's finalists for "Product Liability Department" of the year. Ed was identified by The Legal 500 US in 2007 and 2008 as part of its recommendation of Jones Day as a preeminent firm for pharmaceutical and medical device defense. He was selected for inclusion in the International Who's Who of Life Sciences Lawyers in 2008.

Ed's counseling experience has involved corporate governance, electronic discovery, minimizing litigation risks, protecting trade secrets, drafting warranties, dealer and distributor relationships, and complying with consumer protection statutes. He has helped clients conduct internal investigations. Before joining Jones Day, he was an associate with Jenner & Block in Chicago.

Ed has honed his trial and appellate skills by providing pro bono representation. He led a team that won for a death row inmate a new trial based on the withholding of exculpatory evidence ("Judge Says Inmate Entitled To Retrial," Cleveland Plain Dealer, March 25, 2006, at B1). In 2008, Jones Day was awarded The Beacon of Justice Award by the National Legal Aid & Defender Association for its work on the D'Ambrosio and other death penalty cases.

Ed also is actively involved in Firm and community affairs. He has served as the Partner for Professional Personnel in the Cleveland Office as well as the pro bono and training coordinator in the Houston Office. He sat on the board of directors of the adult literacy organization Project: LEARN from 1997 to 2003, serving as its vice president and on its nominating and finance committees.
