John Goetz defends companies in product liability litigation and commercial business disputes, including a focus on aviation law. He has represented manufacturers and others in aviation litigation, NTSB investigations, and FAA actions; and he is part of the Firm's team addressing key legal considerations for the NextGen Transportation System. His practice also includes defense of state consumer class actions, D&O actions, and toxic tort matters.

John has represented clients such as Parker Hannifin, Penske Automotive, R.J. Reynolds, Textron, and U. S. Steel in trial and appellate courts across the country. He represents Yamaha in off-road vehicle litigation and multijurisdictional proceedings. He was part of the trial teams for Parker Hannifin in litigation involving the crash of a former Missouri governor's plane and USAir Flight 427. John also worked as part of the team handling post-litigation matters and MDL litigation arising out of the crash of Silk Air Flight 185. He also has represented dioceses in several matters.

John co-chairs Jones Day's airlines and aviation industry practice, and he is a licensed pilot. He has published various articles on litigation strategy, is a frequent speaker at aviation and other seminars, and has served as a hearing committee officer for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Disciplinary Board. He has been president of the board of directors of Catholic Charities for the Diocese of Pittsburgh and the Catholic Charities Free Health Care Center. John serves on boards for the Pittsburgh Mercy Health System and the Boy Scouts.
