Lawyer Overview

Lawrence G. (Larry) McBride is of counsel in the Washington, D.C. office of Foley & Lardner LLP, where he is a member of the firm's Environmental Regulation and Appellate Practices. He is also a member of the Energy Industry Team. Mr. McBride represents operators, lessees, and claimants regarding natural resource development issues involving coal, oil and gas, hardrock and non-energy minerals, and related rights and property.

He focuses on federal and Indian land mineral operations and Interior Department authorization and regulation matters; Bureau of Land Management (BLM) issuance and supervision of federal oil and gas and coal leases; Minerals Management Service royalty collection on federal leases. and management of OCS operations; Office of Surface Mining regulation of coal mining; and BLM and Forest Service regulation of hardrock mining operations. Mr. McBride handles litigation and arbitration on these issues, and handles administrative cases at Interior, EPA and FERC. He also handles rulemaking and legislation pertaining to federal regulation of natural resources, including drafting, analyzing and commenting on legislation and proposed rules and strategy for these proceedings.

Before entering private practice, Mr. McBride was an assistant chief in the General Litigation Section of the Environment and Natural Resources Division at the Justice Department. He also held a series of positions at the Department of the Interior's Solicitor's Office, chiefly supervising public land minerals matters.

Mr. McBride was recently selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America 2010 in the fields of mining law and natural resources law.

Mr. McBride co-authored the chapter on coal in Sustainable Environmental Law (ELI 1993) and presented "Inverse Condemnation Issues in Revising the Mining Law" to the 1992 Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Institute. Mr. McBride also served as an adjunct professor of law in George Washington University's environmental law program, teaching the federal public lands course. He is a vice chair of the Mining Committee of the ABA's E&ER Section.

A law graduate of the University of California, Berkeley (J.D., 1973, Boalt Hall), Mr. McBride received his A.B. degree from Stanford University (1970, with honors). He is admitted to practice in California and the District of Columbia.
