Lawyer Overview
Tony Dias's legal experience is as diverse as it is intense. During his nearly 20 years of practice, he has served as primary counsel in a number of high-profile and novel matters involving some of the world's largest and industry leading manufacturing, consumer product, telecommunication, energy, and construction companies. Tony's practice integrates his extensive trial, government investigation, legislative, and communications/media experience.
Most recently, Tony served as lead counsel to Mattel and Fisher-Price in investigations and claims raised by 45 state attorneys general and state departments of health arising out of the voluntary recall of toys with the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Following a year-long investigation led by a nationally representative group of state attorneys general, a cooperative resolution of claims was reached and individual consent judgments were negotiated and filed in individual states. This was the first and remains the only settlement and resolution of this type with a multistate group of attorneys general.
Tony has broader experience with multistate state attorney general investigations and litigation. For example, he was instrumental in the negotiation and resolution of issues relating to the sale of consumer products nationwide. In resolving the matter, a cooperative agreement containing proactive industry commitments and safe harbors was reached with 50 state attorneys general. Tony has and continues to work with state attorneys general on a wide variety of emerging issues involving business conduct, consumer protection, and other corporate compliance matters. He is actively involved with individual state attorneys general and with the National Association of Attorneys General.
Tony represents clients as legal issues expand into the Executive Office, federal departments and agencies, and the United States Congress. In addition, Tony handles legislative issues and investigations arising in state and local governments in more than 26 states. Tony has testified at legislative hearings as a company spokesperson on business conduct, public policy, and legal issues. He has served as a legal counselor to state and local legislative bodies on legal reform issues and is actively engaged with mayors, city councils, and city attorneys in many American cities. He spearheads a wide variety of children's health, workforce development, and best practice initiatives in more than 30 cities.
Tony has served as first chair trial counsel in numerous federal and state courts in complex commercial disputes and in arbitrations and regulatory matters. He has litigated a wide range of matters including industry challenges to primary metal manufacturing processes and pricing, rate restructuring for cable companies, product defects, breach of contract disputes, and business conduct.
Tony holds leadership positions in national and local organizations promoting better public policy, improving children's health, and reducing risks in disadvantaged neighborhoods. He is a member of the board of directors of the National Organization of African Americans in Housing, a member of the U.S. Conference of Mayors Business Council, a member of the board of directors for the United Way of Allegheny, a member and past president of the board of directors of the Parental Stress Center, and a member of the board of trustees of the Fox Chapel Country Day School.
Tony has been honored by Pittsburgh Magazine as one of its "40 Under 40" for "vision, passion, commitment, visibility, diversity of interests and involvement" in the community. Tony was also recognized by the Pittsburgh Business Times as one of its "Fast Trackers." The fast tracker designation is awarded to individuals who have helped drive Pittsburgh's future and who have had an impact in their industries and communities before the age of 45.
In 2008, Tony was awarded the Parental Stress Center's Frieda Shapira Friend of the Family Award. The award is presented each year to the person who demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to preventing child abuse and neglect and strengthening families in and around Pittsburgh.
