Darren Cottriel has litigated and tried commercial and business disputes covering a wide range of services and issues. Darren has represented public and private companies, financial institutions, and public entities in state and federal courts in matters involving partnership and corporate opportunity; contract disputes; real estate and development disputes; complex construction and project disputes; escrow, corporate trust, and fiduciary services disputes; creditors rights enforcement actions; and unfair competition and theft of trade secret matters. Darren has tried numerous cases in federal and state courts, in private arbitrations, and judicial references. He also has extensive experience representing clients in mediations and settlement negotiations.

As part of his practice, Darren frequently represents owners/developers, national homebuilders, design engineers, and investors in complex disputes and litigation involving construction of public works, commercial construction, and land development projects. Darren brings practical, "real life" experience and perspective in representing clients in development and construction disputes. Before his legal practice, he was a licensed general contractor and partner in a development and construction company in Northern California.

For the past four years, Darren has been selected by Los Angeles Magazine and Law & Politics as a "Rising Star" for business litigation in Southern California. "Rising Stars" are nominated by their peers as being among the top lawyers in the state under the age of 40, and less than three percent of attorneys in Southern California receive this honor.

Prior to joining Jones Day, Darren was managing partner of the Orange County office of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP and chair of that firm's Orange County litigation practice.

Darren's civic activities include serving on the board of trustees of Vanguard University. He is a member of the Orange County Bar Association and the Orange County Association of Trial Lawyers. He is author of "The Right to Hunt in the Twenty-First Century: Can the Public Trust Doctrine Save an American Tradition?" 27 Pac. L.J. 1235 (1996).
