Law Firm Overview

Let me tell you about myself. I have been married 15 years. My wife Susanne O’Leary Mahoney is a Speech Pathologist at the Preschool Education Center with USD 500. We have two girls, Molly and Meg, 2 and 4. My father was Judge Bill Mahoney and he was a practicing attorney for over 25 years before he became a judge. He retired from the bench in 1993. He died in 1995. My mother Alberta Mahoney still lives in the Kansas City area. I have 4 older sisters. Annie, Colleen, Maureen and Molly. Maureen still lives here in Wyandotte County.

I have been around lawyers and judges all my life. My sisters Maureen and Colleen are both lawyers and married lawyers. I have lived most of my adult life in Wyandotte County. I attended Christ the King and Bishop Ward High School, graduating in 1982. I graduated from Texas Christian University in 1986 and law school at the University of Kansas. After graduation, I was a JAGC Officer in the United States Navy for over four years in Philadelphia.

After getting out of the military, I returned to Kansas City, KS and started in private practice with my father in 1993. Since that time, I have appeared in several courts in Kansas, including Wyandotte, Johnson, Leavenworth and Douglas counties, as well as several municipalities. My practice primarily involves representing individuals that have problems and tying to solve them, whether they are criminal or civil in nature. Including my military experience, I have had over 50 jury trials and had several bench trials a month. I have sat as a judge pro tem when the judges are on vacation many times for the last 10 years, and presided over trials and made decisions. In addition, when I was in the military I was responsible for conducting Article 32 investigations to determine the disposition of allegations against service members. I also appeared at administrative hearings all over New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and New Jersey.

Based on my legal experience, I believe I have the confidence to make the tough decisions. I also think it is important that a judge be an active member of the community. I was a member of Leadership 2000, President of Project Turn-Around, a counseling service agency, Co-Chair of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Kansas City, MO for 4 years. I am a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the American Bar Association, the Wyandotte county Bar Association, and the American Legion.
