Drexel has extensive engineering experience, having held various engineering positions throughout his eight years as an Air Force engineer, prior to joining Jones Day. While at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, he designed analog and digital data acquisition systems for high-speed operational and environmental testing of guidance systems and navigational systems. In addition, he directed the development of a second generation reference navigational system, wherein his duties included hardware and software integration and developing and enhancing Kalman filter algorithms and other adaptive filtering algorithms.

While stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB, Drexel managed the development and acquisition of infrared navigational and infrared targeting systems for use on F-15 and F-16 fighter jets, which included specifying and evaluating infrared vision systems and target identification systems that utilized neural networks and adaptive filtering schemes. While serving in the Air Force, he earned a master's degree in electrical engineering from Wright State University where his course of study included a focus in VLSI circuit design, control theory, digital signal processing, detection-estimation-and-optimal filter theory, and spectral analysis.

Drexel is a member of the Cleveland Bar Association, the Cleveland Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Intellectual Property Law Section of the American Bar Association. Drexel serves as a member of the board of trustees on several nonprofit organizations that serve the Greater Cleveland area. He also serves as an elected member of the Shaker Heights Board of Education.
