Lawyer Overview

Walter ("Bud") Slatkin has been practicing law since 1970. For the past 20 years his practice has emphasized real estate and business practice.

Bud is a Colorado native. He attended the Denver Public Schools, University of Redlands in California and received a B.A. from the University of Colorado. In 1970 he received a J.D. from the University of Colorado. While in law school, Bud participated in creating and editing a real estate textbook authored by Professor Norton Steuben. He also worked for the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado, participating in criminal trials and drafting briefs submitted to the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. Bud is admitted to practice before the Colorado Supreme Court United States District Court for the District of Colorado and the United States Tenth District Court of Appeals.

While Bud is primarily now involved in office practice, his early years were also spent in the courtroom. In the case of Russell v. First American Mortgage Company, he was successful in establishing the duty and liability of the lender with regard to making representations to a borrower concerning a loan commitment. In Coale v. Dow Chemical Company, he received a $1 million dollar judgment on behalf of the owners of a prize bull that was sterilized by a mislabeled insecticide, the facts of the case being used in an episode of "L.A. Law".

Bud's present practice involves the representation of buyers, sellers, developers and lenders with regard to real estate and the representation of business and corporate clients involved not only in real estate but also other business activities, including computer software and micro-nutrient supplements. Bud’s practice expands beyond the State of Colorado and includes multi-national corporations. He developed the documents for the first condominium conversion project in the City of Denver and has been involved in drafting complex legal documents, including timber sales agreements involving thousands of acres of timber, the acquisition through foreclosure for a lender of a hotel in Aspen, Colorado, and then the sale of the hotel, together with the sale of an office building in Los Angeles, California and a tax-free exchange involving an elderly care campus in Arizona and Colorado and multiple commercial properties in Colorado.

Bud is active in the Denver and Colorado Bar Associations, being the past chairman of the law office management committee and a member of the legal fee arbitration committee. He was also chairman of the University of Denver Institute for Interfaith Studies, president of a statewide Jewish student campus support organization and board member of numerous community organizations. He is presently revising the Ethics section of the Colorado Bar Association Practitioner's Guide to Colorado Business Organizations.

Bud is married and has four children, all of which provide his most important challenges.
