Lawyer Overview
Ann K. Smith is a native of Jacksonville, Florida. With the exception of three years of law school in Gainesville, Florida, she has lived in Jacksonville all of her life. Ann graduated from Wolfson High School and then attended FCCJ, obtaining an Associate in Arts degree. She continued on to the University of North Florida, where she earned her bachelors degree in Accounting, with honors, with a minor in computer information systems. After obtaining her bachelor's degree, Ann worked full time with Barnett Bank (which merged into Bank of America), she earned her Master of Business Administration, with honors, while attending the University of North Florida part-time. While earning that degree, she also gave birth to her son, Adam, and her daughter, Lisa, who are now both adults.
After graduation, Ann worked at Barnett Bank as an electronic data processing auditor, and then for Bisbee-Baldwin Corporation as a special assets manager. In 1991, upon the advice and encouragement of her sister who was a lawyer practicing in Jacksonville, Ann quit her job and moved to Gainesville, where she attended law school full time at the University of Florida. At that time, Ann was a single parent to her children, who were, at the time of the move to Gainesville, three and five years old. In 1994, Ann obtained her Juris Doctor, with honors, in the top 10% of her class and obtained the designation of Order of the Coif. At that time, she moved back to Jacksonville with her children to practice law in her home town.
Ann is a founding partner of Smith Greene and Combs, and practices in the areas of business litigation and family law. Previously, she was a managing shareholder with the law firm Bartlett, Heekin, Smith, Greene & Malin, P.A., a firm which concentrated on commercial litigation and family law. Prior to that, Ann practiced with Kirschner, Main, Petrie, Graham, Tanner & Demont, P.A., a primarily commercial litigation and business transactional firm.
Ann is also an adjunct professor at the Florida Coastal School of Law. She is a member of the Florida Bar, the Jacksonville Bar Association, the Family Law Inns of Court and the Jacksonville Women Lawyer's Association. Ann is also authorized to practice in the United States Middle District of Florida and Eleventh Circuit Court.
Ann enjoys ocean kayaking and other beach activities, gourmet cooking, reading and spending time with her husband and other family members (including her two miniature dachshunds). Above all, Ann loves international travel and learning world history and culture.
Ann's diverse experiences in life, education and employment provide a well-rounded background for business and family matters. The challenges presented in obtaining advanced educational degrees while raising children gives Ann a practical and common sense perspective, and the ability to analyze the sometimes forgotten human side of legal problems. As a trial attorney, Ann is a strong advocate for her clients. Her background in commercial litigation has given her the trial skills necessary to prepare for and handle complex matters. Ann strives to provide exemplary legal and practical advice, as well as a personal touch. Her philosophy is that a good lawyer must above all listen to the specific and unique needs of each individual client, offer the pros and cons of each available course of action, keep the client fully informed and promptly respond to a client's needs and concerns.
