Lawyer Overview

John Boyle is an aggressive and effective advocate whose practice includes the representation of large, multinational companies, including aircraft component, industrial, and consumer product manufacturers; contractors and developers involved in commercial and utility development; and pharmaceutical manufacturers, among others. John has employed his past legislative experience in representing clients in multistate investigations by state attorneys general as well as various state and local governmental bodies. John's unique experience provides clients with novel and effective solutions to both existing and potential litigation.

John recently represented Mattel and Fisher-Price in a wide-ranging investigation and claims involving an action by 45 state attorneys general and state departments of health arising out of the voluntary recall of toys in conjunction with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. John worked with numerous state attorneys general offices in facilitating an expedited investigation and cooperative resolution of claims that resulted in the negotiation and filing of individual consent judgments in 45 states. John also successfully represented hotel and commercial real estate developers in litigation brought by a state attorney general on behalf of a local government agency. John's legislative and economic development experience was useful in bridging communication gaps between the developers and state and local government officials, resulting in the dismissal of the litigation. John subsequently led the negotiation of a comprehensive settlement with the state attorney general to enable the proposed development to move forward. In addition, John served on the trial team in litigation brought by numerous state attorneys general against various pharmaceutical manufacturers regarding pricing issues. John also served as the lead attorney for one manufacturer in the action brought by the Pennsylvania Attorney General.

John's trial experience spans numerous jurisdictions and states, where he has served as lead and co-counsel. John has handled a wide range of cases, including complex commercial litigation, product liability, breach of contract, trade secrets and restrictive covenants, and employment and wrongful discharge claims. His broad litigation experience includes conducting all phases of discovery, taking and defending numerous depositions, and participating in hearings and arguing motions in state and federal courts in several jurisdictions. John has successfully represented Fortune 500 companies in bench and jury trials as well as arbitrations and mediations. John also has argued cases in various appellate courts, including the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. In a recent successful appeal where John argued on behalf of a client adverse to the Attorney General of the United States, the court noted John's efforts in its opinion, commending John's "excellent legal representation" and noting that "the Court's outcome today reflects [John's] selfless commitment of time, effort and resourcefulness." (Campbell v. Attorney General of the United States, No. 05-3163 (3d Cir. Dec. 5, 2007)).

John is involved in community and civic activities. He is currently a board member of the Western Pennsylvania March of Dimes and serves on its statewide Government Relations Committee. John has served as a volunteer through the Allegheny County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program, representing abused and neglected children before the juvenile and family court systems. He has organized fund-raising activities for the United Way, Allegheny County CASA program, and March of Dimes. John also devotes time to providing pro bono services, including representing women and seniors in protection from abuse hearings. Recently, John developed and implemented, and currently assists in administering, the pro bono ADR program in conjunction with the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. This program provides counsel to pro se litigants for mandatory ADR proceedings.

Before joining Jones Day, John served on the staff of United States Congressman John P. Murtha, handling legislative, constituent, and economic development issues.
