Lawyer Overview
Doug Burton is a partner in the Real Estate Practice Group. He joined the firm in 1995. His practice focuses on all aspects of real estate law, including financing, private equity investment, development, acquisitions, dispositions and leasing. He serves as counsel for a broad range of clients, including pension fund advisors, Fortune 50 corporations, developers and non-profit institutions.
Practice
Mr. Burton’s recent projects include the representation of Lowe's Home Centers in the acquisition, leasing and development of numerous sites throughout the Northeast; the portfolio sale of twelve assisted living facilities, across multiple funds, for $300 Million; and the representation of a developer in the acquisition, financing, development and operation of a nationally listed historic site as a $100+ Million, 300 room luxury hotel, including the negotiation of development and joint venture agreements with a pension plan equity partner, implementation of a historic tax credit structure, and the negotiation of a ground lease with a fee owner and space leases and management agreements with the signature bar, restaurant and hotel manager. Mr. Burton also represented asset managers and advisors in well over half a billion dollars of joint ventures, acquisitions and dispositions between 2006 and 2008.
His other experience includes the acquisition and disposition of multi-family residential apartment complexes throughout the East Coast, focusing on the Mid-Atlantic region, for cash and in connection with REIT and partnership strategies; the acquisition and development of low income residential housing with low income housing tax credits and both hard and soft mortgage financing; and the acquisition of portfolios of office properties on the Providence waterfront and the western suburbs of Boston.
Mr. Burton's leasing experience includes office, retail and biotechnology/life science space from both the landlord's and tenant's perspectives, including the lease-up of a 275,000 square foot multi-tenant office building.
Speaking Engagements
Mr. Burton is a frequent lecturer at the MIT Center for Real Estate, most recently conducting a full day professional development seminar on June 17, 2009 concerning the fundamentals of loan workouts. He will be conducing a similar seminar on October 26, 2009
Mr. Burton co-taught a day long professional development seminar at the New York University Schack Institute of Real Estate on July 22, 2009 concerning commercial real estate workouts.
He is scheduled to be a guest lecturer at Columbia University, on November 10, 2009, for a MSRED course entitled: "Real Estate Investing in a Distressed Environment".

Mr. Burton is a member of the Pension Real Estate Association and the International Counsel of Shopping Centers. He is also a member of the American Bar Association, Boston Bar Association and Massachusetts Bar Association.
Community Involvement
Mr. Burton is the president of his alumni class at Amherst College, and past member of the board of directors of the Mountain View Association.
