Lawyer Overview

Andrea is a shareholder in the firm of Briggs and Morgan, Professional Association. She is based in our Minneapolis office and is a member of the Business Law Section and Intellectual Property Practice Group. Andrea practices principally in the areas of:

  • Trademarks
  • Copyrights
  • Publishing agreements
  • Software licensing
  • Loan transactions and securitization
  • Educational institutions

Andrea practices in the area of intellectual property, particularly trademark clearance, prosecution and registration, both in the U.S. and other countries; publishing contracts; work for hire agreements; software development and license agreements; and copyright and trademark licensing.

For more than 30 years, Andrea has also represented banks and borrowers in multi-million dollar commercial loan transactions. She has represented banks and borrowers in secured and unsecured revolving credit, letter of credit and term loan facilities; banks as issuers of letters of credit to secure tax-exempt bonds; borrowers, particularly educational institutions, in tax-exempt financings; and issuers in public securitizations totaling over $10 billion.

This combination of lending law and intellectual property is unusual and useful. Given the increasing dominance of trademarked goods and services in the marketplace, and the copyright implications for all business of computers and the Internet, intellectual property assets frequently collateralize working capital loans and acquisition financings.

Andrea is a member of the Ramsey County, Minnesota and American Bar associations, as well as the International Trademark Association (INTA), Minnesota Intellectual Property Law Association (MIPLA) and Minnesota Women Lawyers. She formerly served as co-chair of the Minnesota State Bar Association’s U.C.C. Committee in the Business Law Section. In the community, she is currently a member of the board of directors for Neighborhood House.

Andrea is the author of an article published in the Hamline Law Review entitled “Secured Lenders and Computerized Borrowers: An Introduction to Copyright and Trade Secret Law.” She has spoken at various CLE seminars on intellectual property and banking subjects.

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Andrea received her B.A. magna cum laude from Wesleyan University (Middletown, Connecticut) and her law degree from the University of Virginia. Following law school, she was a law clerk for the Honorable C. Donald Peterson of the Minnesota Supreme Court. She joined Briggs in 1977.
