Lawyer Overview

Rick Shaw's practice is focused on representing management in traditional labor relations matters and in employment-related counseling and litigation. Rick advises and represents employers in NLRB unfair labor practice and representation cases and in high-stakes arbitration proceedings. He negotiates collective bargaining agreements and counsels clients on such issues as election campaign conduct, operating during strikes, successorship and other obligations arising in acquisitions and divestitures, and decision and effects bargaining in conjunction with plant relocations and shutdowns. He has substantial experience in advising clients on their obligations under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) and other laws relating to reductions in force. Rick also advises restructuring companies with respect to rejection and modification of labor contracts and retiree benefits and represents them in negotiations and litigation in bankruptcy.

Rick has worked on substantial matters with many companies, including, among others, Alcoa, Bridgestone/Firestone, Century Aluminum, General Motors, Macy's, Verizon Communications, and Westinghouse Electric. His restructuring and bankruptcy representations include Chrysler, Dana Corporation, Federated Department Stores, Fruehauf Trailer, Herman's Sporting Goods, Independence Air, Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical, LTV Steel, Metaldyne, and Napster.

Rick is a Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers and a member of the American Bar Association (Litigation Section, Labor and Employment Law Section, and Committee on Practice and Procedure Under the National Labor Relations Act), the Pennsylvania Bar Association, and the Allegheny County Bar Association. He also serves on the board of trustees of the American Heart Association, Allegheny Division.
