Lawyer Overview

Roy Powell's practice is primarily devoted to complex commercial litigation, with an emphasis on construction and development-related disputes. He is cochair of Jones Day's Firmwide real estate/construction litigation practice and is a member of the Firm's multidisciplinary construction practice team.

Roy's practice includes representation of owners/developers, contractors, suppliers, and design professionals. He has represented clients in litigation as well as dispute avoidance counseling in construction matters that include virtually every project delivery method in multiple jurisdictions in the United States as well as in other parts of the world, with a special emphasis on expanding markets in Asia. He has extensive experience in counseling from the contracting and documentation phase of projects to dispute avoidance and claim preparation. In addition to construction-related matters, he has litigated many types of other commercial disputes, including securities matters, intellectual property disputes, and multiple complex post-closing disputes associated with purchases and sales of substantial businesses and/or operating assets.

Furthermore, he has more than 15 years of extensive experience in litigation related to the telecommunications industry. He has also participated in many arbitrations, mediations, and other alternative dispute resolution processes as counsel and as arbitrator. In 2004, Roy was selected as one of Pennsylvania's "Super Lawyers" consisting of the top 5 percent of attorneys in Pennsylvania by Law & Politics magazine.

Roy is a member of the ABA and its Construction Industry Forum, the Pennsylvania and Allegheny County Bar Associations' Construction Litigation Sections and ADR Committee, the American Institute of Architects, the Associated Builders and Contractors, the Urban Land Institute, and the board of directors of Neighborhood Legal Services Association. He is also a life member of the Penn State Alumni Association. Roy has served on the American Arbitration Association national panel of arbitrators.

Roy has written articles and book chapters on a number of construction-related topics for Aspen Publishers, the Pennsylvania Bar Institute, and other legal journals and has participated as a faculty member for the 2000 and 2002 Construction Litigation Superconferences, the 2001 and 2003 Global Construction Superconferences in London, and for CoreNet Global's Seminars that are part of the master of corporate real estate certification. Roy currently serves as chairman of the board of governors of Diamond Run Golf Club and on the board of directors of Variety Children's Charity.
