Lawyer Overview

David Clossey's career with the Firm spans nearly 40 years. He joined Jones Day's Cleveland Office in 1968, became a Partner in 1974, and has had a broad practice involving virtually all types of corporate and real estate transactions and finance. A substantial portion of his practice has involved cross-border transactions and other international matters.

David led the Firm's efforts, as Partner-in-Charge, in establishing an office in Dallas, Texas, which opened in 1981 and within a few years became one of the prominent Dallas law firms.

From 1984 to 1988, David was one of four managing partners of the Trammell Crow Company, then the largest real estate development company in the United States. He was the chief financial officer and the chief administrative officer of the company, and he built a real estate investment bank, Trammell Crow Ventures, which developed a number of now widely used real estate finance structures. From 1988 to 1990, David was a partner in James D. Wolfensohn Incorporated, a small New York-based investment banking firm founded by James Wolfensohn, who subsequently was president of the World Bank, and Paul Volcker, former chairman of the board of governors of the Federal Reserve System.

David returned to Jones Day in 1990 to establish and to develop the Firm's international practice. From 1990 to 1996, as chairman of Jones Day Europe, he was based in Paris and focused principally on developing the practice in Europe, which is now comprised of more than 400 lawyers in eight offices. In 1996, he moved to New York, became Partner-in-Charge of the international practice, and focused principally on developing the Firm's practice in Asia, which is now comprised of more than 200 lawyers based in eight offices.

Today, David focuses principally on further development of the Firm's significant practice in China, comprised of more than 125 lawyers in four offices, and on representation of Firm clients, principally on cross-border and international matters.
