Lawyer Overview
Joe Patiño represents companies in high-stakes commercial and intellectual property disputes. He has argued before the courts of 20 different states and has particular experience with patent litigation-specific proceedings. For example, he successfully defended Bridge Medical in "bet the company" patent litigation, securing a judgment of unenforceability of the asserted patent at trial and a precedential affirmance on appeal (McKesson Info Solutions v. Bridge Medical, 487 F.3d 897).
Joe has represented companies in a variety of industries, including Acon Laboratories, Bridge Medical, Celgene Corporation, Cricket Communications, Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma, Eset, KeyCorp, Leap Wireless, New York Life, QOL Medical, Rocateq B.V., and The Royal Bank of Scotland.
Joe also does extensive pro bono work. He is a board member of the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program (SDVLP), a premier pro bono organization that serves more than 6,500 clients per year in San Diego County. Joe received the Wiley W. Manuel Award for his pro bono contributions in 2005, 2006, and 2007 and was named Pro Bono Volunteer of the Year by the Ford Motor Company in 1998.
Joe writes and publishes articles and continuing education materials focusing on patent litigation and practice development issues. In addition to presenting his materials at seminars of the American Bar Association, the Defense Research Institute, the Mortgage Bankers Association, and the Institute for Continuing Legal Education, he is an author of Michigan Civil Procedure.
