Lawyer Overview
James N. Bierman is a partner with Foley & Lardner LLP, where he is a member of the Government & Public Policy and International Practices. He has been involved in many management roles within the firm, including past chair of the General Regulatory Practice, former managing partner of the Washington, D.C. office for 15 years, and past vice chair of the firm's National Pro Bono Committee. He served on the firm's Management Committee from 1989 1998. Mr. Bierman currently serves as chair of the firm's National Recruiting Committee. Mr. Bierman counsels commercial clients in administrative and business matters concerning international trade, export licensing, and customs tariffs. He represents clients in legislative hearings before Congress and in proceedings before the International Trade Commission, the Food and Drug Administration, the Federal Communications Commission, and the Departments of State, Commerce, Defense, Treasury, and Health and Human Services. From 1973 to 1975, Mr. Bierman was an assistant dean at Harvard Law School. In 1979, he was appointed by the Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare to a one-year term as a member of the Department's Civil Rights Reviewing Authority. He is currently a member of the board and past co-chair of the Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs. He is also a past member of Washington University's National Council of the School of Arts and Sciences. Mr. Bierman is listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who in American Law. Mr. Bierman graduated from Washington University (B.A., magna cum laude, 1967), Phi Beta Kappa, and Harvard Law School (J.D., 1970). He served as managing editor of the Harvard Journal on Legislation. Mr. Bierman is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and before the United States Supreme Court.
