While appellate lawyers spend much of their time researching in the library or drafting briefs at their desks, GMSR founding partner Martin Stein – Marty, to everyone who knows him – loves the courtroom. The rapid give-and-take of appellate argument and the fast-on-your-feet analysis and presentation of complex legal issues suit Marty to a T. After graduating from UCLA with a degree in Political Science in 1962, Marty received his law degree from UCLA School of Law in 1965, where he cut his teeth in the courtroom in the Moot Court Honors Program. He then spent four years in the Judge Advocate General's Corps, United States Army, rising to the rank of captain while handling a wide variety of military trials and appellate matters. In 1970, he joined the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office, starting in jury trials and then focusing on appeals. In 1976, he joined the State Public Defender's Office, serving as Supervising Attorney of the appellate section and rising to Chief Assistant State Public Defender in charge of the Los Angeles office. During his criminal defense years, Marty briefed and argued many appeals in the Court of Appeal and the California Supreme Court. Wanting to pursue civil appeals, in 1980 Marty joined the appellate law firm of Horvitz & Greines where he quickly established expertise in government tort liability claims. In 1983, Marty joined Irving Greines, Alan Martin, and Kent Richland in founding GMSR. For more than 20 years, Marty has continued to represent public entities in the state and federal appellate courts and has also developed substantial expertise in medical malpractice, representing both public entities and private hospitals. He lectures widely on appellate practice, and has served as an expert witness on the claim presentation requirements of the Tort Claims Act. Marty is an avid sports fan, and in his spare time he follows the exploits of his beloved Bruins basketball team. He and his wife Ruby live in the South Bay where they shower their attention on their two dogs, Kao and Casanova, their cat Scruffy, and visiting grandchildren. |
