Lawyer Overview

Robert Cave joined the firm in 1978 following his clerkship with The Honorable William B. Jones, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He has tried numerous jury and bench trials and argued appeals in the state and federal courts. Two of the cases he successfully handled at the trial court level were affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court.

His practice covers complex commercial claims, including breached agreements, violation of fiduciary duties, partnership/association disputes, and intellectual property challenges; employment litigation, including wrongful discharge, discrimination, management/union disputes, and sexual harassment; and tort claims, including products liability, fraud, libel, toxic tort, environmental hazards, and professional malpractice. His principal clients have included government agencies, universities, professional associations, insurance companies, financial institutions, medical institutions, other major commercial entities, and prominent individuals. From 1987 until 1998 he served as outside counsel for the Washington Redskins, handling a number of highly publicized cases for the team.

Bob served for three years as one of five members of the firm’s Executive Committee, which manages Hogan & Hartson’s national and international practice. Before becoming a member of the committee in 1997, he served for four years as the Chair of the firm’s Training and Development Committee, and before that he served for four years as Training Coordinator for the firm’s litigation practice. After leaving the Executive Committee, Bob served for two years as one of two Practice Group Directors for the firm's labor and employment group.

Between college and law school, Bob served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Captain and Naval Flight Officer. In 1973-74 he served in the South China Sea flying off the USS Midway. At the conclusion of his tour, he was recognized as the First Marine Air Wing’s outstanding company grade officer and selected as its nominee, one of three corps-wide, for the outstanding Naval Flight Officer of the Marine Corps.
