Lawyer Overview
Jerre Doak has defended America's leading companies in more than 125 proposed class actions in 40 states across the country. Those cases have involved privacy statutes, Internet sales practices, medical monitoring, toxic exposure, personal injury, product liability, equitable claims, consumer fraud statutes, and a variety of other federal and state statutes, including the Driver's Privacy Protection Act (DPPA), the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), the Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA), ERISA, and RICO.
Increasingly, these cases pose a threat of catastrophic liability, with plaintiffs' counsel seeking hundreds of millions (and sometimes billions) of dollars on behalf of a proposed class. In this environment, it is important to have lawyers who know how to win the case, not merely settle it. Jerre has a proven track record of defeating class certification or prevailing on the merits. Since 2000, Jerre has been lead counsel for his clients in more than 50 proposed class actions, only three of which settled one after class certification was granted, one after class certification was denied, and one before the class certification issue was decided. All of the other cases were defeated in the litigation process.
Jerre has represented R.J. Reynolds in more than 60 proposed class actions, which have presented diverse theories of liability, including personal injury, addiction, medical monitoring, consumer fraud, product liability, unjust enrichment, conspiracy, and RICO.
Jerre also has represented Experian companies in more than a dozen proposed class actions involving claims under the Fair Credit Reporting Act and other state and federal statutes concerning privacy, consumer protection, credit repair, and pricing.
In addition, Jerre has successfully defended several proposed class actions seeking medical monitoring for individuals alleging exposure to toxic substances, including cigarette smoke, secondhand smoke, and beryllium cases.
Jerre has practiced law with Jones Day his entire career. He began in the Cleveland Office in 1980 and moved to Dallas in 1984. He has represented R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Experian, ConsumerInfo.com, Washington Group International, Brush Wellman, Comp USA, TRW, Los Angeles County, USAA, Maybelline, E-Systems, Bank of America, J.C. Penney, Aetna, Texas Industries, General Motors, and National City Bank. He also privately consults with other law firms to provide strategic advice in the defense of significant class actions.
Jerre's pro bono activities include representing the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity in Dallas and serving on their board of advisors. He also served on the Board of Councilors for the University of Dallas.
