Janel graduated from Concordia College in 1991 with a double major in business administration and communications. In 1994, she received her J.D. from the University of North Dakota School of Law. Janel first became involved with Smith & Strege during law school when she spent two summers clerking for the firm. Upon graduating from the UND School of Law, she joined the firm as an associate attorney. In 2003, Janel became the third partner at Smith, Strege & Fredericksen.

Janel, her husband, Chad, and their three children live in Breckenridge, Minnesota.
