Lawyer Overview
John Crawford previously chaired the Firm's dispute resolution practice. He was Partner-in-Charge of the Paris Office from 1977 to 1994 and during a leave of absence from 1968 to 1970, he served as special assistant to David A. Morse, the director-general of the International Labor Organization, the Geneva-based United Nations agency. He practices in the areas of international arbitration and litigation, in particular as counsel in commercial arbitration matters before the International Chamber of Commerce and other arbitral institutions, and has acted as arbitrator or mediator in a number of international dispute resolution matters. In addition, he has significant experience in multijurisdictional aspects of United States and European litigation. He also has extensive experience in the formation, financing, and ongoing activities of international corporate joint ventures and other international projects and transactions in a variety of industrial sectors, including oil and gas, engineering and construction, and electronics.
John is a member of the American Bar Association (International Law and Practice Section), the International Bar Association, The American Society of International Law, and the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. He has participated as a lecturer and panel member in many conferences and seminars on international law and practice, particularly in the area of international arbitration. From 1987 to 1990, he served as chairman of the European Council of American Chambers of Commerce; and from 1985 to 1988, he served as president of the American Chamber of Commerce in France, where he has been a director since 1976. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations in New York and is a trustee of the United States Council for International Business (the U.S. National Committee of the ICC) and of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. He currently serves as vice president and governor of the American Hospital in Paris. He is a member of the council and member of the Finance Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce, and served as rapporteur of the ICC Commission on Ethical Practices from 1976 to 1980, and as a member of several ICC committees for the reform of ICC arbitration rules and procedures. He is founding treasurer and director of the International Arbitration Institute, Paris.
