The Law Offices of Joel B. Rudin provides creative, meticulous, and fearless criminal defense representation during State and Federal pre-indictment investigations, trials, appeals, and collateral attacks on convictions. The firm brings ground-breaking civil rights lawsuits on behalf of the wrongfully convicted to recover some of the largest civil damage awards in the country, principally by exposing patterns of misconduct by police departments and prosecutors' offices.

Successful Representation At Every Level To The U.S. Supreme Court

The firm's principal attorney, Joel B. Rudin, has a breadth of criminal and civil trial and appellate experience that is unusual for one attorney. During his 30-year career, he has handled hundreds of criminal cases, obtaining acquittals at trial or favorable results in difficult homicide, sex offense, narcotics, white collar, and other cases. He has successfully argued appeals at every level, including the United States Supreme Court. He has won numerous cases on collateral attack after re-investigating and finding solutions that eluded previous attorneys. And he has won multi-million dollar damage awards for wrongfully convicted clients, including, in 2003, the largest award at the time in New York State history for prosecutorial misconduct: $5 million in the Alberto Ramos case.

National Reputation For Producing 'Remarkable Triumphs' In 'Lost Causes'

Award-winning investigative journalist Tom Robbins wrote in the November 24, 2010 issue of the Village Voice: "Joel Rudin is an attorney for lost causes. His diligent lawyering has produced remarkable triumphs ..." New York Times op-ed columnist Bob Herbert, in a series of six columns he wrote about the Detective Zaher Zahrey police corruption case handled by Mr. Rudin, described Mr. Rudin as "a fiercely dedicated lawyer," while the late Murray Kempton, legendary columnist for the New York Post and then Newsday, called him "the most persistent and successful salvager of lives near ruined."

Mr. Rudin is the recipient of the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers' 2011 Justice Thurgood S. Marshall Award as Outstanding Practitioner.

The firm, on behalf of the National and New York State Associations of Criminal Defense Lawyers ("NACDL"), has prepared and submitted amicus briefs, on issues of national importance, before the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals, and Mr. Rudin recently testified about prosecutorial misconduct before the New York State Bar Association Task Force on Wrongful Convictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:
Comfort Level - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
Credentials - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
Cost - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
City - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?
