Lawyer Overview

Thierry Buytaert practices Belgian, European, and international banking and finance law and has extensive experience in regulatory matters, securitization, export financing, project financing, factoring, leasing, and clearing and settlement operations. Prior to joining Jones Day, he worked as an in-house legal counsel with Generale Bank in Brussels from 1976 to 1990, and was the partner-in-charge of the Brussels office of the law firm of Mayer Brown & Platt from 1990 to 1995. As counsel to various major European financial institutions and bankers' associations, Thierry has been involved in structuring numerous international financing transactions requiring coordination of the laws of various jurisdictions.

He is a member of the French order of the Brussels Bar, the Legal Committee of the Belgian Financial Forum, and the European Association for Banking and Financial Law. He is also a member of the advisory board of the Institute for Financial Law. Thierry has spoken at seminars on topics relating to general banking and finance and in particular on securitization, export and project finance, and clearing and settlement systems. He practices in Dutch, English, French, and German.
