Same Sex Estate Planning and "Divorce" Overview
At Burris Law Offices, we represent gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and heterosexual clients in the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota. Our emphasis is on alternative family law, particularly same-sex estate planning and divorce.
We understand that discrimination can be a part of daily life for those of us in the GLBT community and that your committed relationship–even if it is recognized as marriage in another state – does not yet have the same legal status here in Minnesota as it may elsewhere.A goal of our practice is to leverage current laws to rebalance the scales in your favor, whether you are in a committed same-sex relationship or in the process of ending one.
As you may know, the unequal legal status of GLBT citizens can have devastating effects on individuals, their partners and their families. We can be denied rights that married heterosexuals take for granted, such as visiting our partners in the hospital or making decisions regarding their medical care after a tragic event.
We face the prospect that, no matter how much money we've managed to earn or save in our lifetimes,we may grow old without guarantees that a loved one will be allowed to properly care for us.
Further, our wishes to pass property or other assets on to anyone other than a blood relative in the event of our incapacity or death can be thwarted by family interference and inordinate taxation. The list goes on and on.
Although neither same-sex marriage nor divorce are yet recognized by Minnesota law, Burris Law Offices can help you take advantage of the laws that exist to secure your future and your interests.
In our practice, we use existing legal tools to build a legal foundation to protect same-sex partners, including:
- Living trusts
- Wills
- Health care directives
- Powers of attorney
We work to keep your private matters private by resolving issues out of court when possible.
