Parenting Plan Overview

Parenting Plan

Typically created with an attorney, parenting plans map out shared parental responsibility for children by defining who does what. Ideally, the goal of any parenting plan is to facilitate parent cooperation so the divorce or separation has the least possible impact on their children. In Florida, the parenting plan sets forth a time sharing arrangement. There is no separate determination of custody. Custody is determined by the time sharing agreement.

Our suggestion to parents – no matter how difficult it may be – is work together. Work with an attorney on a plan. Keep in mind that parties have control in mediation and can design a parenting plan that fits their lives. If you go to litigation, then you are bound by a judge's decision.

We have seen all types of scenarios and have extensive experience creating parenting plans. We have been told that we often think of topics and questions that could have been easily overlooked.

Key discussion areas include who makes medical, educational or religious decisions for the children. Parenting plans can also describe conditions for travel, adult lifestyle (i.e., significant others, alcohol use, etc.), right of first refusal, approval of third-party caregivers, and communication and technology.

Our law office employs the services of a Florida-registered paralegal with 14 years experience. If necessary, we also provide referrals to skilled counselors. We are sensitive to our clients' needs. We offer common-sense solutions based on current law, experience and empathy, while taking your future into account.
