Julie S. Northup Overview

Jule S. (Julie) Northup joined Barrett & Farahany, LLP as a partner and litigating attorney in September 2008.

Before joining Barrett & Farahany, Julie was a partner at Thompson, Rollins, & Schwartz, LLC, a firm whose practice focused on business immigration and representation of plaintiffs, individual defendants, and small businesses in employment matters. She has also held an associate role in the Labor and Employment practice group at Kilpatrick Stockton, LLP, and in the national class-action firm of Herman, Mathis, Casey, Kitchens & Gerel, LLC. Prior to law school, she worked as a human resources management consultant and university administrator.

A cum laude Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Sweet Briar College, Julie spent her junior year studying at the Institute of Political Studies in Paris. She earned an M.P.A. from New York University and a J.D. from the University of Washington, at which she was articles editor of the Washington Law Review.

Julie is immediate past chair of the Labor and Employment Section of the Atlanta Bar. She has also chaired the Labor and Employment Law Section of the Georgia Bar and served as secretary of the Georgia Chapter of the National Employment Lawyers Association. She was named a Super Lawyer in 2009, and Rising Star Super Lawyer in Georgia by Law & Politics and Atlanta magazines in 2005, 2006, and 2007, and was featured in the On the Rise edition of the Fulton County Daily Report in 2005.

Julie is particularly proud of her family. Her husband, Fred, is the executive director of Athletes for a Better World, Inc. and former dean of St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral in Seattle. Her son, Fred, Jr., is the founder and principal owner of Southdown Creative, a Seattle-based film production company. Her son Temple, a former sitcom writer, is currently enrolled in the graduate program in Mass Communications at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Her work and family aside, Julie's other great passion is music. She is a member of the Grammy-winning Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and has also sung with the acclaimed Atlanta Jazz Chorus. She plays the piano, guitar, and bass. Julie also enjoys serving the community as a mentor with the I Have a Dream Foundation, A.D. Williams Chapter, and was recently featured in the January 2009 issue of The Atlanta Lawyers for her work with the organization.
