Attorney Joseph A. Scrofano is a tough, smart trial lawyer who was raised in Texas where he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with Special Honors. He has called Washington, DC his home since 2005 when he moved here to attend American University's Washington College of Law and School of International Service.

As a DC criminal defense lawyer, Mr. Scrofano has represented and fought for over 250 clients in DC Superior Court on a variety of offenses, including, among others, DUI's, drug and gun possession, and traffic offenses. In one case, Mr. Scrofano was told by a prosecutor that if she ever found herself in trouble with the law, she would hire him. An overwhelming majority of Mr. Scrofano's cases have resulted dismissals, not guilty verdicts, and probationary sentences.

Mr. Scrofano has also represented folks in family law matters and civil litigation in DC and Maryland. He also handles criminal appeals in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. Mr. Scrofano is licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. In 2013, Mr. Scrofano attended and graduated from Gerry Spence's Trial Lawyers College, a prestigious and selective trial advocacy college at the Thunderhead Ranch in Wyoming.

Before starting Scrofano Law, Mr. Scrofano spent two years clerking for the Honorable Natalia Combs Greene in the DC Superior Court where he worked on hundreds of complex civil and criminal cases, including substantial work on an opinion that was published by the Daily Washington Law Reporter. The editor of the Daily Washington Law Reporter referred to that opinion as "one of the most well-written, thoroughly-reasoned, erudite, impartial, and comprehensive Memorandum Opinions ever to come out of the D.C. Superior Court." His former boss and mentor Judge Natalia Combs Greene, who had previously served as the director of training at the United States Attorneys Office for the District of Columbia, taught him incredible lessons about trial advocacy and the criminal justice system. That experience also gave him unique insight on how judges make decisions and respond to legal arguments. In 2010, in a tough economy, with a desire to fight for individuals instead of institutions, he took a chance and founded Scrofano Law.

While in law school, Mr. Scrofano participated in one of the school's law journals, served as a Dean's fellow, and participated in several legal internships. As a participant in American University's dual degree program, he received his Juris Doctor in 2008 and a Master of Arts in International Affairs in 2009.

In his free time, Mr. Scrofano is a voting rights advocate. In 2008, he worked as a voter protection advocate in Pennsylvania during the historical presidential election. In 2010, Mr. Scrofano was selected to serve as a Short-Term Observer as part of an international delegation to observe the parliamentary elections in Kosovo where he was posted in the eastern town of Gjilan. Mr. Scrofano returned as a voter protection advocate for the 2012 presidential campaign where he helped coordinate the training and placement of over 2,000 attorneys across polling stations in Virginia to fight against efforts to disenfranchise voters.
