Walnut Creek Family Law Center, Inc. is well known for its handling of high-profile, contentious family law cases involving divorce, custody, support, asset division, domestic violence and false allegations. A significant number of our cases come from referrals from other family law attorneys in high-conflict cases. While we prefer to negotiate settlements whenever possible, we know where the door to the courtroom is and what to do once inside.

Attorney Merritt L. Weisinger is a Board Certified Family Law Specialist who has been practicing family law since 1973. He is highly regarded as a competent and aggressive attorney and his skills are respected by the Courts, Judges and other counsel. He is well educated; goal oriented and understands both the procedural and substantive aspects of family law litigation.

Mr. Weisinger has, to date, made in excess of 5,000 court appearances in his career. He is a Certified Family Law Specialist duly certified by the Board of Legal Specialization of the State Bar of California for more than 20 years. He has taught both Family Law and Civil Procedure in law school and has a background which includes more than 20 years of civil litigation practice, including jury trials, in addition to 43 years of family law.

We take what is very much an engineering mentality and apply it to the specific cases before us. We gather as much information as possible; analyze the case to figure out what the issues are and what needs to be done to resolve them, to get our client from Point A to Point B. We move our cases toward settlement or trial. There is not a lot of B.S.

Once we have analyzed the case, it tells us what to do rather than the other way around. We know how to recognize issues, how to obtain information, what the law is, and how to present our cases. We know how to work cooperatively with opposing counsel, what the Court will likely do in most circumstances, and how to try or settle cases in a reasonable and expeditious manner. Obviously, not all cases lend themselves to settlement, either because the parties are combative or uncooperative, their agendas are to play a game rather than to resolve things, or because no one has educated the client(s) as to issues, the law and probable or possible outcomes. We do not set unreasonable expectations and we are not the kind of attorneys who will tell someone what they want to hear as opposed to how we view the facts of life in their case.

We are an experienced law firm that handles high-conflict family law cases as well as less complex and mundane family law issues, both from the inception and for modifications of existing orders. We well understand the cost of family law litigation, both financially and emotionally, and while in most cases there is no way to tell what the case will wind up costing, there are some general parameters we look at ie. Are the parties motivated to resolve things? Who is on the other side? What are the issues? Are they willing to share their children? What information is available, etc.?

We try to keep fees down and don’t gouge our clients. However, having said that, in the long run it comes down to the attitude of the parties. If they are goal oriented, they get out of it relatively inexpensively. If the goal is to punish the other side, to be oppositional, if there are domestic violence issues, or business interests involved, time is money and litigation is not cheap. There is an old saying: "You play; you pay!" What we learned a long time ago is that the key to resolving cases is client control. We work with our clients on their cases but if an attorney allows his or her client free reign, cases drag on indefinitely. You need to focus on the specific issues, not the personalities, whenever possible, and to figure out what it takes to get issues resolved.

Our law firm represents most aspects of family law including the following:
