I am attorney Elisabeth Pride, and I represent individuals in Pittsburgh and throughout southwestern Pennsylvania in family law matters. My background as a trial lawyer gives me the skills to represent in court individuals who are unable to reach an out-of-court settlement during the divorce process. However, I believe that it is in almost every client’s best interest to settle out of court if possible, and my practice is primarily devoted to helping people resolve their cases through the collaborative process, mediation or other forms of out-of-court negotiation.

In collaborative law, attorneys and their clients work closely together to create solutions that are tailored to the needs of individual families with the goal of maximizing the result for both parties. Because both parties are directly involved in the decision-making process, negotiated settlements are often more durable than an outcome imposed by a judge. More importantly, negotiations reached in the collaborative law process are often more in line with both parties’ ideas of fairness and workability to meet their unique needs and the needs of their children.

Because the collaborative process avoids the traditional litigation view of "winners" and "losers," collaborative clients are often better able to maintain functional relationships than litigation clients, which is important especially for parties who share children, or social or business interests. My collaborative clients typically report higher satisfaction with the process than litigation clients, and also with the results.

Collaborative law, mediation and other forms of out-of-court negotiation can be used to help resolve all kinds of disputes. In my practice, I use it to help with family law issues, including:

  • Divorce
  • Child custody
  • Child support
  • Spousal support and alimony
  • Prenuptial and post-nuptial agreements

Since beginning the practice of law in 1999, I have devoted my practice exclusively to the resolution of divorce and other family law matters. Learn more about me and about your process options by contacting my law firm — Pride Law — to schedule a free initial consultation.

Your client is in a heated custody case. His daughter has recently shown dismaying behavioral changes. Your client eavesdrops on the child and believes he hears comments that suggest sexual abuse. How do you advise the client?
The Path to Enlightenment, Spring, 2013
Having graduated law school with the promise that if I was diligent and had the law and facts behind me I would prevail, I finally succumbed to the reality that success for my clients was often arbitrary.
