Independent Medical Examination Overview

If you are currently receiving treatment for a work-related injury or illness, you may have heard of something called an independent medical examination (IME). An IME may be requested by either side when there is a dispute in a workers’ compensation claim. To protect your interests, you should ask an experienced attorney about your rights and options.

At Spooner & Perkins, P.C., our firm has been protecting the interests of workplace injury victims for more than 55 years. From our offices in Kansas City, we work diligently to help our clients to obtain the benefits they need in both Kansas and Missouri. We have a complete understanding of workers' compensation law, and we are committed to helping you reach the most favorable outcome settlement of your case.

What Is an Independent Medical Examination?

When you are injured at work or suffer an occupational illness, a workers’ compensation doctor will provide your care and make assessments of issues such as your work restrictions. An IME is an opportunity to have an independent doctor examine you, review your medical records and then provide a second opinion. The following are examples of times when the workers’ compensation insurance company may request an IME:

  • To determine if you can work part-time
  • To determine your work restrictions
  • To determine whether surgery is necessary
  • To determine your treatment options
  • To provide a permanent partial disability or permanent partial impairment rating
  • To determine if you have reached maximum medical improvement

You can also obtain an independent medical examination if you do not agree with the treatment or assessments of the workers’ compensation doctor. In Kansas, the cost of an IME, up to $500, is paid by workers’ compensation. In Missouri, you are responsible for the cost of an IME.
