Fosamax Osteoporosis Overview

Osteoporosis is a serious condition that affects nearly 44 million Americans. While this disease is irreversible, many osteoporosis patients take medications containing bisphosphonates, intended to prevent bone mass loss. These medications include Fosamax, Boniva, Actonel and Reclast.

Despite the drugs' positive effects on osteoporosis patients, recent studies have found a correlation with bisphosphonate medications and an increased likelihood of femur fractures, as well as a degenerative jaw condition known as osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ).

In 2005, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requested an update to the labeling of Fosamax to include a reference to jawbone tissue disease. In September 2010, an expert task force of the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research released a study recommending that the FDA consider additional labeling to warn users of bisphosphonates of the risk of femur fractures. In October 2010 the FDA issued an alert requiring additional labeling changes based on the recommendations of the ASBMR task force.
