In Your Corner Helping to Retain Your Veterans Benefits

If you receive benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) as either a wartime veteran or a surviving spouse, you may have questions on the Eligibility Verification Report (EVR) from the VA.

The form is used to determine if estimated expenses and income reported last year were fairly accurate. The reported information may be used to award you any extra benefits if expenses were more than expected. The veteran or spouse's information is surveyed to see if he or she is expected to remain eligible.

It is very important that you return the form in a timely manner. If you do not return the form, the VA can stop your benefits, and it is a very difficult process to get benefits reinstated. It generally takes six to eight months to get approved, and you could lose your benefits for months.

Make sure to include costs of assisted living and nursing or home care as medical expenses on the EVR. These costs may make the difference between entitlement to benefits and the cessation of benefits. Worse yet, the VA could issue a demand for repayment. We are here to help and answer your questions regarding veterans' benefits that can make the difference and allow you to have a comfortable retirement.
