Matthew Vance graduated from New Mexico State University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, a supplementary Major in Law and Society, and a Minor in English. In 1998, Mr. Vance received his Juris Doctorate from the University of New Mexico School of Law. During law school, Mr. Vance participated in the ATLA mock trial competition and attended the Universidad de Guanajuato during the summer of 1997.

Mr. Vance was admitted to the New Mexico bar in October 1998. Following admission, Mr. Vance joined the New Mexico Public Defender Department and worked in the Department's Metropolitan Division as a trial attorney. In May of 2000, Mr. Vance accepted a position with the Honorable Glenn T. Ellington on the New Mexico Court of Appeals. Unfortunately the election results for 2000 did not turn out well for Judge Ellington and Mr. Vance. In December of 2000, Mr. Vance joined the New Mexico Public Defender Department's Albuquerque Felony Trial Division. Mr. Vance then joined the firm of Hatch, Allen & Shepherd, P.A. in January of 2002.
