Law Firm Overview

Potential clients often ask me if they need a civilian lawyer. Frankly, it is a bit self serving to say "yes." Ultimately, that is a question every soldier, sailor, airman or marine must ask themselves. Clearly, there are things a civilian lawyer can do that a Judge Advocate cannot do. First, Judge Advocates rarely represent suspects and is often assigned only after charges are preferred or discharge proceedings are initiated. A civilian attorney is able to begin representation before charges are preferred. This can sometimes make a difference.

Experience

Important evidence can be obtained early in an investigation that can prevent charges from being filed. Also, it is often a great benefit to have an attorney readily available for consultation when an investigation is ongoing. As a young active duty Judge Advocate, I provided zealous and effective representation for my clients. I have good results. Still, I am a better lawyer now after over 28 years of representing soldiers. If you believe you may need a civilian lawyer, make an appointment then decide what is best for you.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:
Comfort Level - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
Credentials - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
Cost - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
City - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?
