Robert DeCurtins was born March 20, 1954, in Miami, Florida. He graduated from Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond, Kentucky in 1976 with a bachelor's of science in criminology.

In 1977, Robert graduated second in his class from Lincoln M. Zonn, Institute of Polygraph. Subsequently, he was trained on interrogation techniques by homicide detectives who administered polygraph examinations for the Dayton, Ohio, Police Department. He conducted approximately 8000 polygraph exams and was licensed in North Carolina for a number of years.

Graduating from the University of Dayton School of Law, Dayton, Ohio, with his Juris Doctor degree in 1983, Robert worked as an assistant public defender for a year and a half in Charlotte, North Carolina. Formerly a partner in Cardinal, DeCurtins, Johnson, & Roberts for approximately 10 years, he started his Charlotte private practice in 1985. His solo practice concentrates on criminal defense and personal injury. Robert DeCurtins is a member of the North Carolina State Bar, Mecklenburg County Bar and the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers.
