Pradaxa (dabigatran etexilate mesylate) is a medication that is prescribed to prevent strokes and atrial fibrillation, a condition associated with irregular heartbeat. The drug was created by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc. and approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2010. Since December 2011, the FDA has been evaluating post-marketing reports of serious bleeding events in patients taking Pradaxa as well as other side effects such as anaphylactic reaction and shock, increased bilirubin levels and dysfunction of the liver.

About 16 percent of Pradaxa users have experienced internal bleeding. Other Pradaxa users have reported symptoms or side effects such as:
