Law Firm Overview

Tradition
Robert L. Langdon began representing clients with serious injuries because of negligence or defective products more than thirty years ago.  Bob began his legal career in Lexington, Missouri practicing along side Ike Skelton, now a United States Congressman.  Since then, Bob has established a reputation of excellence in representing injured plaintiffs.

Kent Emison began practicing law in 1981.  Kent developed and honed essential skills while a partner at a Kansas City, Missouri law firm.

Bob Langdon and Kent Emison began working together in 1987.  Since then, they have dedicated their practice exclusively to representing those who are seriouly injured and the families of those killed because of negligence or defective products.  During this time, Langdon & Emison has developed a nationally renowned practice, representing plaintiffs across the country, including Missouri, Arkansas, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Washington, Wisconsin, and other states.

Results
Langdon & Emison has an extremely strong tradition as trial lawyers, demonstrating a willingness to take on powerful corporate entities on behalf of those who suffered serious injuries or were killed by defective products or negligence.  Since 1990, the attorneys at Langdon & Emison have won verdicts and settlements for our clients in excess of $250 million.

In 1993, Bob Langdon and Kent Emison won an $11.3 million verdict in Baker v. General Motors Corp. 522 U.S. 222, 118 S. Ct. 657 (1998).  In that landmark decision, the Supreme Court held that General Motors would not be permitted to "buy" the silence of one of its employees, Ronald E. Elwell.  Most significantly, the "Ivey Memo", General Motors' cost-benefit analysis showing that General Motors place profits over safety, was first admitted into evidence in Baker. Other notable verdicts include:

  • $59 million verdict against Toyota Motor Company in Baltimore, Maryland for the a young man who lost both legs due to a defective seat and restraint system.
  • $26.4 million verdict agasint Ford Motor Company in Baltimore, Maryland for a man severely burned due to a fuel system defect in his Ford pickup.
  • $16.94 million verdict against Ford Motor Company in Jacksonville, Florida for a young woman who was paralyzed because her vehicle did not have a warning about the dangers of riding in a reclined seat.
  • $12.5 million verdict against Ford Motor Company in Kansas City, Missouri for the family of three individuals who were burned and killed due to a defective fuel system.
  • $6 million verdict against Wal-Mart in Johnson County, Missouri for the family of a small child who was killed in a fire caused by a defective fan.
  • $4 million verdict against Trade Winds in Kansas City, Missouri for the family of a Missouri Highway Patrolman who was killed when a Trade Winds truck collided with the Patrolman's vehicle on the side of the road.

    Leadership
The attorneys of Langdon & Emison are leaders outside of the courtroom as well as inside.

Bob Langdon served as President of the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys (MATA) in 1993 and was recently appointed to the Board of the American Trial Lawyers Association (ATLA).  Bob also serves on the Executive Board of the Attorneys Infomation Exchange Group (AIEG).

Kent Emison currently serves as the President of MATA and has been on its Executive Committee since 1997.  Emison also served as Editor of the Missouri Trial Attorney Magazine from 1997 through 2003.

Langdon & Emison maintains a strong commitment to ensuring the injured individual's right to a trial by jury through its work in MATA, ATLA, AIEG and other organizations.  Bob Langdon and Kent Emison also believe strongly in local civic responsibility.  Each partner actively partcipates in organizations and events to improve their local communities.

    Consumer Safety
Langdon & Emison stands firm by its commitment to promote consumer safety, particularly in the area of automobiles.  Bob Langdon and Kent Emison were at the forefront of pinpointing a dangerous problem, namely, that many vehicle fires were being caused by the siphoning of gasoline from the gas tank following a collision.  This dangerous defect could be easily remedied by a small valve that cost mere pennies.  In cases brought by Langdon and Emison dealing with this issue, juries determined that the defects could be found in both Ford and General Motors vehicles.  Today, as a result of those trials, both companies provide anti-siphoning components in most of their vehicles.
